ROCKIN’ ICHIRO & BOOGIE WOOGIE SWING BOYS

In 1995, Rockin' Ichiro left DAWN DROPPERS, a legendary band on Osaka's rockabilly scene, and began sessions with Shigeki, a young guitar prodigy who had been DAWN DROPPERS' roadie, while also performing with the late Michiaki Amio. Using the simple guitar-and-bass format, they focused on street performances while also playing at bars and live music venues. In 1997, Masutake joined on drums, forming a trio. As their name suggests, their sound is based on 1940s-50s boogie, swing, and rock 'n' roll, while also incorporating standard jazz and blues as well as covers of artists such as Tom Waits and John Pizzarelli. This nostalgic-yet-progressive sound feels fresh precisely because of its roots in the past. After releasing their first album, Shozo replaced the drummer, and the band subsequently made a major impact with Trippin' Elephant Records. Sadly, Rockin' Ichiro passed away in 2016 (R.I.P.).
